In the Preface to his book Aime Gumber writes that their impressions from the words of the Japanese themselves, and that his work is "the most complete and picturesque description of the habits and customs of the Japanese people". Since the publication of the French edition, it took nearly two centuries (in 1870 the book was printed in Russian), but now Japan remains a mystery to Europeans, and many of the customs and traditions described by aimé Gumbura, the Japanese respect and cherish.
The edition is illustrated with gorgeous vintage prints and adorned with plates from watercolors by the Japanese artists of the XIX century.
